中国虽然不是一个以英语为母语的国家,但是英语在中国教育系统中的分量却不小。

Lots of people ask me about how to speak English like a native speaker. According to my personal experiences and knowledge, those who failed to learn the language in their youth, especially childhood(before 7), can never be an actual native speaker of that language due to the atrophy of brain elasticity over age. But don't  be disappointed---I believe we still could infinitely approach to it.

Today is not a easy day.

Jiang Mengnan, a 26-year-old girl with severe hearing loss, made her way into one of China's most prestigious universities, gaining wide attention and appreciation from web users.

然而,不可否认的是,如今我们很多人依旧停留在哑巴英语的水平,听说能力严重不足;小到在街上为游客指路,大到去跨国企业进行口语面试,都常常感到吃力。

I was raised in local Chinese school for 9 years(aka 九年制义务教育) till 9th grade. Then I transferred to Shanghai American School, where everyone speaks English. That's the turning point where my English level, especially speaking, improved and in fact, upgraded.

I has been working very hard on my legal research  homework. searching for the relevant precedents among the sea of cases in the Lexisnexis database,  reading them, analyzing them and locating those of true value is really challenging  and energy-consuming. However, this is something I have to experience as an old new law school student. Being old because I am in my forties. Being new because this is the first time I have contact with Common Law system.  Quite often, I am told that  it is hard for common law students to survive. However, I can't imagine how hard it is. Now, I eventually have sort of understanding what it would be to study in a law school in a common law country. Cases are their normal routine. As a non-natvie speaker, It adds difficulty to study in English. Understanding the cases are not easy, let alone analyzing them and making arguments in class. Anything standing in your way is something offers opportunity of your progress. That is something pushing you outside of your comfort zone and leading your way to the success. I know, I see. Therefore, I enjoy it, with pain, though.

When I first went to the school, I was nervous, scared, and didn't know what to do. I couldn't speak fluent English; I didn't have friends. It was tough. How did I grow into a guy who can chat and joke with a bunch of native speakers in English?

It is time for me to take a break, I tell myself. Anyway, I manage to finish my case list by the end of my day. At that moment, the conversation with Nick, my online English speaking teacher, occurs to me. He talked a lot about his living, educational and working experience during our conversation which is extremely interesting as well as enlightening to me. He used to be a call center agent in Philippine, which makes him to have extensive access to native  English speakers. In addition, it also offers him chances to gain skills of communication. I can tell how skillful he is in these two aspects. He is the best teacher among all teacher with whom I have had my online speaking class. He told me that he spent a large amount to time to get himself  used to speaking and thinking in American way. I can hardly believe that English was his most hatred  subject when he was college. I am encouraged by him that I can speak good English as long as I can invest my time in it since my level is relatively good. I agree. Time will see.

Through lip reading and self-study, Jiang has been accepted as a PhD candidate by Tsinghua University after finishing her master's degree at Jilin University.

Here is my point.

9159com金沙网站 4(为什么很多中国人明明学了很多年英语,口语能力却很差?)

The main reason that we are not able to speak English fluently is that we don't know how to improvise, i.e., constructing sentences while speaking.

Born into a family of the Yao ethnic group in Yizhang county in Central China's Hunan province, Jiang entered a world of sheer silence at the age of 6 due to the use of drugs that were toxic to her ears, according to the Yangtze Evening Post.

(为什么很多中国人明明学了很多年英语,口语能力却很差?)

关于这一点,曾经在Google实习的李同学给出了回答:

But trust me, the native speakers don't just make up random sentences right away, either! They are speaking all day long, aren't they? ---They use those sentences everyday, and therefore are able to produce the similar sentences structures fluently. If you force them to use some obscure sentence structures they've never used before, they will stuck as well, very hard. It's just that the colloquial language that they can easily handle.

关于这一点,曾经在Google实习的李同学给出了回答:

9159com金沙网站 6

Following this logic, we can handle it, too, if we practice. But how? I say, "speak to yourself". This is the method that I found very useful.

Learning to talk with others

9159com金沙网站 7

英语君觉得他分析得非常到位:

Whenever I have some new thoughts in my mind, I will verbally explain them to myself  in English. It could be anything---new math concepts, controversial news, policies, unfinished debates, etc.. When I find some logic that I don't know how to describe, I search it up and then use the new learnt sentences in my speech. During the process of explaining, I'm developing my skills of constructing sentences, and because I use my own words to describe, those sentences are very good candidates for the future possible conversations. I'm not saying that I might talk about the same topics(probably not), but the explanatory languages(sentence structures) I practice are commonly used and are the core of speech.

Not being able to hear and speak, the very first challenge for Jiang was learning how to communicate with others to better adapt to society.

英语君觉得他分析得非常到位:

This is an interesting question。 I will answer from my experience。 Hope this helps。

I do this all the time, and now I can pretty much say that I am infinitely closed to a native speaker of English.

Jiang's parents, both middle school teachers, taught her to learn vocalization by putting her hands on their throats, in an attempt to show Jiang the vibration of their vocal cords.

This is an interesting question。 I will answer from my experience。 Hope this helps。

这是一个很有趣的问题。我来用自己的亲身经历回答吧。希望能帮到大家。

I grew up in China and have received English education since I was 6 years old。 Not only was I taught English in school for 12 years but also I was taking English classes even on weekends since I was 8 years old。 I consider myself as a very good English speaker。

  1. Verbally explain familiar concepts in English to your self.

  2. Search up new sentence structures and use them in your speech.

You can say the sentences right away during conversations, because and only because you've used them before.

Learning to pronounce one single syllable takes at least a thousand times of practice. However, different people can have different lip movements, which in turn adds to the learning difficulty.

People might question me, saying that the English environment shapes me the most. I admit; but environment only gives pressure to push me on learning English, and it's the practice that I give to myself, which actually turns me into a completely different person.

Jiang's hearing loss also impeded her from smoothly keeping up with classes at school. It took her some time before she could finally understand her fast-talking teachers.

Speaking is definitely not included as part of the curriculum。 The speaking test is optional in Gaokao at least in my province, which is pretty much a joke (You literally read a random English passage while being judged by someone who probably speaks worse English than you)。

口语能力显然并不是教学大纲的一部分。高考里的口语考试也不是必须项,至少在我的省份不是。而且这个考试就跟闹着玩一样(你完全就是随便读一个英文段落,而考官的英语口语可能还不如你)。

She was one year behind her peers at elementary school. To make up the gap, Jiang spent a whole summer vacation learning math with her father and English and Chinese with her mother. Through the joint efforts of her family, she succeeded in skipping the 5th grade.

I have had native English teachers in primary school and high school but they only give 1 lesson per week and the content turned out to be mostly playing with the students, watching movies。

Being friends with a native speaker, the practice I got from TV shows turned out to be long-term beneficial。 I am frequently mistaken as someone from the US when I travel abroad。

"For people who are deaf, like me, I want to tell them that we don't have to feel inferior because of our flaws. Although God closed a door for us, he will certainly open a window for us in other places as long as we work hard enough. We can do as much as the healthy, and maybe we can do better!" said Jiang Mengnan.
