There you are, minding your own business, when your eye starts to spasm out of control. It’s a very annoying feeling which can persist for hours. But is there any cause for alarm? Trinidadians have quite a rich collection of superstitions concerning jumping eyes. For instance, if your right eye jumps, you are going to hear good news, and if your left eye jumps, you are going to hear bad news. Superstitions aside, the short answer is that a twitching eye is totally fine, although in some exceptional cases it may underlie a neurological condition.

Indulging in a few glasses of wine or a couple of cocktails may be a necessary part of life but unfortunately, there are no real benefits to the habit.

A staggering 70 percent of us have reported suffering from regular bloating.

Food intolerance, also known as non-IgE mediated food hypersensitivity or non-allergic food hypersensitivity, refers to difficulty in digesting certain foods. It is important to note that food intolerance is different from food allergy.

You might have experienced an involuntary muscle spasm in your knee or elbow. The same can happen to the orbicularis oculi muscle (the muscle in the face that closes the eyelids).

Dr Altcheck doesn't recommend bathing in rotted milk, but says the dairy product does contain protein and skin-nourishing minerals like vitamin E and zinc.



Food allergies trigger the immune system, while food intolerance does not. Some people suffer digestive problems after eating certain foods, even though their immune system has not reacted - there is no histamine response.



As it happens, those multiple glasses, or a bottle, of red wine can actually be quite harmful to your body - and wreak havoc on your skin.

Your body is basically trying to tell you you're not digesting your food properly or that you have a food allergy or intolerance such as to wheat or lactose.

Foods most commonly associated with food intolerance include dairy products, grains that contain gluten, and foods that cause intestinal gas buildup, such as beans and cabbage.

Eye spams are typically unilateral, occurring in one of the lower eyelids. Sometimes, both eyelids may be involved but the fascicular contractions of each eyelid is independent of each other. The transient and intermittent twitching is semi-rhythmic at a rate of 3-8 Hz.

Vitamin E neutralizes the effect of free radicals, which are molecules that cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. They also damage collagen, or the connective tissues that keep your skin together.

While there have been numerous studies done in an effort to uncover the health benefits of guzzling red wine, realistically, drinking more than a moderate amount can increase the risk of dementia and cause inflammation - which can increase the risk of cancer, depression, and heart disease, according to Dr Mark Menolascino, a doctor of internal medicine.

'Other common causes of bloating include hormonal issues, candida, constipation, too much sugar or booze, stress, dysbiosis (an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in our digestive tract) or IBS,' said nutritionist Rick Hay.


In the majority of cases, eyelid spasms are no cause for concern. These are usually self-limiting and benign, so medical intervention is typically unnecessary. Very rarely, eyelid myokymia may occur as a precursor of hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, Meige syndrome, spastic-paretic facial contracture, and multiple sclerosis.

Meanwhile, Vitamin D has been shown to minimize acne, increase skin elasticity, and lessen the appearance of dark spots.






If that weren’t enough to turn you off the habit completely, red wine also happens to be the worst drink for your skin of all the alcohol choices, according to naturopathic doctor, Dr Isabel Sharkar.

Simply eating too much at once can also dilute down the acid in our stomach, rendering it unable to start breaking down the food efficiently.

Dr Altcheck also says that the two vitamins have healing properties.

Speaking to Popsugar, Dr Sharkar revealed the unfiltered fermented grape juice can negatively impact your skin, especially if you have a condition such as rosacea.

Furthermore, enzymes that act optimally at a lower, more acidic pH, cannot function as well which means that food remains only partially digested and needs to be broken down further.

Tolerance can improve

This is the number-one reason for a twitching eye, according to ophthalmologists. When we’re under a lot of pressure, the body releases stress hormones (cortisol) which triggers a “fight or flight” response. One immediate consequence is muscle arousal, which may affect eyelid muscles as well. This may be a good time to see your friends, unwind, or meditate in order to reduce the stress that might be causing the twitching eye.

'Vitamin D and vitamin E will also help accelerate how fast the skin repairs itself from UV rays, wind, sun, contaminants and pollution,' he told Daily Mail Online.

Additionally, red wine is likely to cause “flushing, redness, and blotchy skin.”

This is usually done by bacteria in the gut and the consequent fermentation process results in the release of gases that may also cause bloating.

And sugar in red wine is partly to blame, as Dr Menolascino notes that the sugar in wine overloads the liver and, as a result, “sends it off to the body as raw sugar in the blood, or converts it directly into hard-to-burn fat.”


Symptoms of food intolerance

More and more people work office jobs that involve a lot of sitting and staring at a computer screen. This sort of lifestyle can lead to dry eye syndrome (DES), also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). Dry eye syndrome is caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. When our eyes are too dry, they might involuntarily start twitching to keep them moisturized. This repeated blinking can trick the brain into making one or both eyes twitch even more. To avoid DES, use eye drops if you use the computer for more than seven hours a day and make sure to look away from the screen at least once every 20 minutes.

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, which encourages the skin to shed its old, dead skin cells to reveal the new, healthy skin cells hidden underneath.


However, the most common causes are often hormone-related. The review explains that testosterone is the hormone that promotes acne the most so acne is a big issue for males and teenage boys in particular.

Sugar is also the culprit in other alcoholic drinks, as it is the leading cause of inflammation from alcohol consumption.


Gluten is one of the most common causes of food intolerance.

In higher concentrations, it also works to reduce pigmentation and brighten the skin.


But women also tend to get acne flare ups about one week before their menstruation starts due to a dip in oestrogen levels which, funnily enough, prevent the development of acne.

It can be difficult to determine whether the patient has a food intolerance or an allergy because the signs and symptoms often overlap.

Caffeine and alcohol have seemingly polar effects on the body. One is a stimulant while the other is an inhibitor — but both can bring a twitching eye when used in excess. It’s important to stay hydrated and to avoid real or artificial sugars when this happens.


Because of this, cocktails - typically mixed drinks, often made with sweet additives like syrups or juice - are almost as bad for your skin.


According to James Li, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic allergy specialist, when it is an allergy, even small amounts result in symptoms, as may be the case with peanuts. Whereas, with food intolerance, tiny amounts will usually have no effect.




'When you get acne, your body may also be trying to alert you to an underlying hormonal or digestive disturbance,' said Mr Hay.

The symptoms of food intolerance generally take longer to emerge, compared to food allergies.

Although pi?a coladas may taste good in the moment, the effects of the sugar can increase cell damage and acne.


Onset typically occurs several hours after ingesting the offending food or compound and may persist for several hours or days. In some cases, symptoms may take 48 hours to arrive.

A jumping eye might be triggered by magnesium deficiency. If the twitch persists, it’s a good idea to get your magnesium levels checked with a simple blood test. If you really are magnesium deficient, you should focus on eating more foods like almonds, oatmeal, or spinach. You can also take magnesium supplements to meet daily Mg needs.

Dr Altcheck says that it's better to use warm milk because it will penetrate the skin faster than cold milk - but warns against staying in the bath for too long.


'It could also be a result of liver imbalance, poor diet especially if you eat too much carbohydrate, stress and allergies amongst other things.'

Some people are intolerant to several groups of foods, making it harder for doctors to determine whether it might be a chronic illness or food intolerance. Identifying which foods are the culprits can take a long time.



Sugar hangovers also exist - meaning a night of sugary cocktails can lead to dull skin and bloodshot eyes, according to Dr Sharkar.


According to the Australian NSW Food Authority, the following are the most common symptoms of food intolerance:

Eyelid infection 眼睑感染

'It's a double-edged sword because on one hand you want to stay in there long enough to absorb the nutrients,' he said. 'On the other hand, you will become dehydrated if you stay in too long and the water will literally roll out your skin. I would say anything beyond 15 minutes would be harmful.'


Red inflamed acne with a white discharge is usually indicative of excess carbohydrate consumption and bacterial overgrowth.


Blepharitis occurs when bacteria infect your eyelids, causing inflammation and redness. This makes the muscles around the eye twitchy. Other symptoms include burning or stinging eyes, dandruff at the base of the eye, and grittiness. The treatment of blepharitis should begin with a visit with your eye doctor to determine the cause of your sore, red, itchy eyelids. Eyelid hygiene is very helpful to treat and control blepharitis, and a good place to begin is applying a wet clean warm compress to melt any blocked residue around the eyelid. Repeat this several times a day.


Beer, whisky, and rum are also not your friends when it comes to skincare.






3. White coating on the tongue 舌苔发白



If you want to wake up bright-eyed and clear-skinned, your best bet is to avoid alcohol altogether, as all of it can contribute to temporary skin damage.

A thin white coating on the tongue can be indicative of digestive disturbances such as microbiome imbalance, iron or B vitamin deficiency and possibly diabetes.


As for the types of milk, Dr Altcheck recommends going with an option that is higher in fat content.



Runny nose


A more realistic solution is sticking only to clear distilled spirits on a night out. As clear alcohol contains the “fewest additives” and “moves through your body the quickest,” according to Dr Sharkar, it will cause the least amount of damage the following day.

'In the case of iron and vitamin B deficiency it is quite likely you will be feeling constantly tired,' Mr Hay said.

Feeling under the weather

On the glycemic index chart, which indicates how much a carbohydrate-containing food raises your blood-sugar levels, skim milk has a level of 32 while whole milk has a level of about 27.



Stomach ache


But as long as you drink in moderation, drinking tons of water - as alcohol causes dehydration - and moisturising the morning after will go a long way.

'Thick, white spots on the tongue that look like pus are more likely to be oral thrush, leukoplakia, or oral lichen planus.

Irritable bowel

Foods that are higher in glycemic index elevate hormones that increase the activity of oil glands in the skin, which could contribute to acne formation.

Causes of food intolerance

High glycemic foods also cause prematurely-aged collagen, which causes the skin to lose its elasticity and become more fragile.

Healthy looking nails should be smooth, curved, with a shine to them and have no spots.

There can be many causes of food intolerance, and we will take a look at each of these in turn.



1) Absence of an enzyme

However, the best milk option, according to Dr Altcheck, is buttermilk.

The thing about nails is that they can cause potentially serious self-image and self-esteem harm.

Enzymes are needed to digest foods fully. If some of these enzymes are missing, or insufficient, proper digestion may be undermined.



People who are lactose intolerant do not have enough lactase, an enzyme that breaks down milk sugar (lactose) into smaller molecules that the body can break down further and absorb through the intestine. If lactose remains in the digestive tract, it can cause spasm, stomachache, bloating, diarrhea, and gas.

Buttermilk is laden in lactic acid, which helps a number of skin-related issues including sloughing off dead skin cells, lightening age spots and tightening skin.

Nail ridges themselves are nothing to be overly concerned about as far as physical health goes but if untreated, they can pose a social problem.

People with an allergy to milk protein have similar symptoms to those with lactose intolerance; that is why lactose intolerant individuals are commonly misdiagnosed as allergic.



Researchers from Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Health Center in Tacoma, WA, found that fructose intolerance is common in children with recurrent or functional abdominal pain.

'Buttermilk has the highest lactic acid in it and will be more emollient to the skin,' Dr Altcheck said.

'That is not to say, however, that you shouldn't have them checked out by your GP just to be on the safe side,' Mr Hay said.

Nearly all foods require an enzyme for proper digestion. According to the British Allergy Foundation, enzyme deficiencies are a common cause of food intolerance.

Once the bath is done, Dr Altcheck says to rinse off thoroughly - because milk decomposes quickly and you could end up smelling like rotten milk - and moisturize your skin.

'For starters, mouth ulcers are found on the inside of the mouth on the gums, tongue and inner cheeks whereas cold sores develop on the outside on the lips.

Certain chemicals in foods and drinks can cause intolerance, including amines in some cheeses, and caffeine in coffee, tea, and chocolates. Some people are more susceptible to these chemicals than others.



3) Food poisoning - toxins


'Most importantly, whilst mouth ulcers are indicative of a weakening immune system, they are non-contagious.

Some foods have naturally-occurring chemicals that can have a toxic effect on humans, causing diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.



Undercooked beans have aflatoxins that can cause extremely unpleasant digestive problems. Fully cooked beans do not have the toxin. Hence, people may wonder why they react to beans after one meal, and not after another.

Milk has more than just skin-nourishing benefits, it can also aid in easing sunburns.

'Cold sores on the other hand are a manifestation of a dormant viral infection which flares up whenever our immune system becomes compromised for whatever reason.

4) Natural occurrence of histamine in some foods



Some foods, such as fish that has not been stored properly, can have an accumulation of histamine as they "rot." A number of people are particularly sensitive to this naturally-occurring histamine and develop skin rashes, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea.

In a previous interview with Daily Mail Online, Dr Joshua Zeichner said a cold milk compress shrinks the cells swollen from the burn and will drive heat away from the sore area.

'They often start popping up as the weather gets colder and in times of stress both of which can weaken our body's innate protective systems.'

Often, the symptoms are similar to anaphylaxis (a strong allergic reaction).



5) Salicylates are present in many foods

'A milk compress can help calm inflamed skin as well, as proteins in the milk coat and soothe the skin,' he said.


Salicylate intolerance, also known as salicylate sensitivity, occurs when somebody reacts to normal amounts of ingested salicylate.


Vertical ridges - not horizontal - can be a sign of anaemia or even rheumatoid arthritis, Medical News Today reports.

Salicylates are derivatives of salicylic acid, which occurs naturally in plants as a defense mechanism against harmful bacteria, fungi, insects, and diseases.

The lactic acid in milk will help peel away the inflamed, dead skin cells while vitamins A and D promote healing.


The chemicals are found in many foods and most people can consume salicylate-containing foods without any adverse effects. However, some people suffer symptoms after eating large amounts. Salicylate intolerant individuals should avoid foods that contain high levels.


6. Yellowing of the eyes and/or skin 眼白或皮肤发黄

Salicylates are present in most plant-sourced foods, including the majority of fruits and vegetables, spices, herbs, tea, and flavor additives. Mint-flavoring, tomato sauce, berries, and citrus fruits have particularly high levels.

For the compress, pour the milk in a bowl, soak a washcloth in the mixture and refrigerate until both are cold.

'Whereas yellowing of the skin may be attributed to an excess intake of beta carotene, vitamin A and vitamin C, in which case it usually poses no threat, yellowing of the eyes is usually observed in people whose livers may be in trouble.

Processed foods with flavor additives are usually high in salicylates as well.



Food additives and intolerance

Processed meat can contain nitrates that are the source of some people's food intolerances.

'The yellowing of the skin or eyes can be symptomatic of something more serious but they are all fundamentally either directly or indirectly related to the health status of the liver.'

Food additive intolerance has been a steadily-growing problem over the last thirty years because more and more foods contain additives.


Even so, food additive intolerance is not estimated to affect more than 1 percent of people.

According to the NHS, jaundice can be caused by gallstones, alcoholic liver disease, pancreatitis, hepatitis, sickle cell, amongst others.

Additives are used to enhance flavors, make foods look more appealing, and to increase their shelf life. Examples of food additives include:

If your eyes keep on twitching every now again out of nowhere, your body is trying to tell you that your nervous system is not very happy.

But don't panic, eye twitches are rarely a sign of anything to be concerned about and more often than not will stop by themselves.

'Electrolyte imbalance and the hydration status of your body are quite often the culprits of nerve spasms and these can be easily fixed,' Mr Hay said.



Of the thousands of additives used in the food industry, a relatively small number are thought to cause problems. The following food additives are known to cause adverse reactions in people:

Eye twitches can also signify a magnesium deficiency.

Nitrates - known to cause itching and skin rashes. Processed meats are generally high in nitrates and nitrites.


MSG (monosodium glutamate) - used as a flavor enhancer. Known to cause headaches.

A recent article published in June this year on the scientific journal?Nutrients?by the American University of Washington reported that 'from a neurological standpoint, magnesium plays an essential role in nerve transmission and neuromuscular conduction.'

Sulfites - used as a food preserver or enhancer. Commonly used in wines. In the United States and European Union, wines bottled after 1987 and 2005, respectively, must state on their labels if they contain sulfites at more than 10 parts per million. A German study found that about 7 percent of people have an intolerance to wine.


Some colorings - especially carmine (red) and annatto (yellow).

Magnesium is essential to nerve signal function, which is why lacking it could be causing your eye twitches.

Diagnosing food intolerance


It is not easy to determine whether somebody has a food intolerance or allergy because the signs and symptoms often overlap. Certain patterns in the symptoms can help a doctor distinguish between the two. In the vast majority of cases, food intolerance symptoms take much longer to appear than food allergies.

Patients are advised to keep a diary and write down which foods are eaten, what the symptoms were like, and when they appeared. The data in the diary can help a dietician or doctor identify which foods are causing adverse reactions, and what steps to take.

Skin prick tests are not 100 percent reliable.

Apart from lactose intolerance and celiac disease, there is no accurate, reliable, and validated test to identify food intolerance. The best diagnostic tool is an exclusion diet, also known as an elimination or diagnostic diet.

Intolerance to regularly-eaten foods may result in adverse reactions running into each other. When this occurs, it is difficult to identify which foods are to blame. There is a higher risk that a chronic condition or disease is erroneously diagnosed.

Exclusion diets are extremely useful in isolating the culprit foods.

In a typical exclusion diet, the suspected food is removed from the diet for a set period, usually between 2 weeks and 2 months. If during this period the adverse reactions resolve, it becomes more likely that the culprit has been found. This can be further confirmed if it is then reintroduced and symptoms return.

The doctor may recommend a skin test and/or a blood test to rule out a food allergy:

Skin prick test - this determines the patient's reaction to a specific food. A small quantity of the suspected food is placed on the patient's back or forearm. The skin is pricked with a needle, allowing some of its substance to penetrate below the skin surface. Allergic people will react with a raised bump. However, skin prick tests are not 100 percent reliable.

Blood test - this measures levels of IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies. These tests are not 100 percent reliable either. The presence of IgE antibodies may be a part of the normal human response and indicate tolerance, rather than an adverse reaction, according to a study published in CMAJ.

The best current treatment for food intolerance is to either avoid certain foods or eat them less often and in smaller amounts, as well as taking supplements that may help digestion.

Tolerance can improve

Some people find that if they stay off the specific food for a while, they have no reaction when eating it again - this is known as tolerance. Maintaining tolerance is often a question of knowing how long to abstain, and how much of it to eat when it is being reintroduced.

As each person reacts differently, the only way to determine this is by trial-and-error.

Is there any relation between food intolerance with acne?. I read that dairy product can caused acne, so is that part of food intolerance.

I had acne in my mid 30th, and when I stopped drinking milk or dairy product and seafood; my skin was cleared up.

My opinion is that nightshades should be taken more seriously as a severe food intolerance, these foods-tomatoes, potatoes, peppers (sweet, bell, hot), tobacco, as well as others that contain solenoid properties may be responsible for symptoms such as joint pain, joint stiffness, breakdown of bones, fatigue, indigestion, stomach upset, reduction in the growth or number of new cells.

People without the ability to breakdown the alkaloid in these foods have a genetic predisposition to this intolerance, while food intolerance may seem less of an emergency than food allergy, this type of food intolerance can cause major disabling symptoms that the public needs to be aware of. Food intolerance can cause long term destruction and damage to cells, cell tissue, organs and organ symptoms. Doctors need to be aware so they can inform patients of the health risks of these foods on their bodies if they do not make the enzymes to properly digest these toxic foods.
